OU Max Westheimer Airport Cuts Ribbon on New ATCT Tower
The University of Oklahoma recently celebrated the opening of a new air traffic control tower at OU Max Westheimer Airport.
Standing 106 feet tall, more than double the current 52 foot facility, the new tower will modernize air traffic control operations and improve safety for pilots and students operating in the airspace at the Norman, Okla. airport. The tower is the first fully new non-military air traffic control tower built in Oklahoma since the 1970s.
Conversations about a new tower began in 1998, but federal and state funding to complete such a complex project became available only in the last few years, the airport notes. The tower’s groundbreaking took place in March 2025, and it will begin operations in early 2027.
“The new air traffic control tower represents a significant investment in the safety of Max Westheimer Airport and the future of aviation,” said Airport Director Lance Lamkin, A.A.E. “We are incredibly excited to bring a world-class facility like this to our own backyard, providing our air traffic controllers with the tools they need to safely manage aircraft while helping inspire and prepare the next generation of aviators.”.
