Commercial spaceflight is opening opportunities for airports not only to operate launch activities, but also to capture aerospace businesses that cater to launch customers. Arturo Machuca, Director of Ellington Airport and Houston Spaceport, shares Ellington’s experience in leveraging its FAA Launch Site Operator License to attract several companies interested in the Final Frontier. Brian Gulliver is a registered professional engineer, project manager, and the leader of the Aerospace and Spaceport practice at Kimley-Horn. Brian is an industry leader in the development and licensing of commercial spaceports and has completed detailed studies, analyses and designs for more than 20 launch complexes and spaceports.

Human Trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery in which traffickers use force, fraud or coercion to control victims for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or labor services against their will. The air transport system can be used by traffickers, so it is important for the aviation community to take action and fight against trafficking. The panel aims to bring awareness of the issue and provide guidance on the available tools and resources to help detect and report trafficking.


Session 6 - Seadog: Airports Helping Airports Impacted by a Natural Disaster

What is your plan for returning to normal operations after your airport is impacted by a natural disaster?  The Southeast Disaster Operations Group, also known as SEADOG, has been coordinating and supporting recovering airports for almost 20 years.  Attendees in this session will leave with a better understanding on what SEADOG can help them do when the disaster strikes.

As a special treat, this session will also include the President/CEO of the National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) to give a national perspective of challenges and endeavors of the airport industry and state aviation agencies, and how they are hard at work to provide the best planning, development, and funding to their respective airports. This panel discussion and open dialogue amongst our state aviation officials will be moderated by SCC’s very own Jane Lucero, asking the questions that will resonate with airports and stakeholders alike.

As airports’ recover from the pandemic-induced downturn, they will see increased pressure from communities and/or regulators to address the potential adverse environmental impacts of the federally-mandated use of AFFF. Not only will they need to understand the extent of PFAS impacts, but what needs to be considered as they continue to develop and operate cost-effectively.  Similarly, as pressure mounts to operate more sustainably and with resilience in mind, how can an airport more easily development a sustainability and resilience program that aligns with community goals and expectations.  This session will provide approaches and strategies to address these challenges.

This panel of seasoned experts in the field of cybersecurity will provide thoughts on how an airport executive can better identify areas of weakness, consider its connected relationships to business partners and community stakeholders, and hear a few best practices for fortifying our airport system, a vital component of this nation’s critical infrastructure.

The FAA will provide updates on the different safety programs and emerging technologies such as commercial space and unmanned aircraft systems. In addition, the FAA will provide an update on the Airport Improvement Program, and the different stimulus programs related to COVID-19 relief.
